A pipeline has been set up into the dock basin, and the dredger CRESTWAY has just connected up and is pumping the first infill into the basin.

With the dredger BRABO employed pumping sand into the basin, apparently the average depth is around 0.5m below the low water level.

I understand that the area around the steps in the SW corner of the basin will not be infilled for a while to allow continued use by the work boats etc.

With the lower bund now complete, the pipeline has been moved back to the dock basin where infilling to the low water level has resumed.

At low water, it is possible to see the lower bund which sits just inside the line of the quay face piles.

Here is the latest picture taken of the dock basin with a height of tide of 1.1m.

The level is just above the low water height and the pipeline has now been moved to commence filling the entrance approaches.

The filling in of the dock basin has resumed with the drdger BARENT ZANEN using dregings from the shelf and pumping into the basin.

The basin is now almost completely filled in and will soon be a thing of the past!

The infill is now complete, so the dock basin is officially no more.

Here is another view taken from Felixstowe docks. The black and yellow wall is the flood wall which surrounded the basin.

From an historical point of view, work commenced on digging the dock basin in 1882, and was completed and opened in 1886. The spoil was used to infill low lying saltings in the surrounding area.

The first commercial vessel entered the dock on April 7th 1886.
